Muyil was an important city with buildings "Petén" style, like "El Castillo" and the three basements of the Entrance Group.
The settlement had a long occupation, evidence has demonstrate that began in the Late Preclassic (300-50 b.C.) and was of great importance in the Late Post Classic (1200-1450 A.D.). Period in which most of the buildings were built and when the city gained great importance in coastal trade networks of the Peninsula.
It is currently surrounded by jungle and is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka'an.
There is an interpretive trail that leads to the lagoon Chunyaxché. It starts at the final part of the Sacbé, that is behind the structure called "The Palace"
